The Ubuntu team just announced on a couple mailing lists the availability of an official beta for Ubuntu Server images on Amazon Web Services. More info regarding this beta can be found on the Ubuntu web site and registration is open to anyone.

It has been an interesting process to put these images together and I must address big thanks to everyone that participated in this efort, including msm, soren, zul, esh, surfous, sg and certainly a few others that I have forgotten.  It's been a great community effort, thanks!  Well, I guess it is done now, so we just have to wait to see what EC2 users think of this image. I am sure there are things that we can improve (there always is) and am anxiously waiting to see what will be the comments about Ubuntu's first step into the cloud.

Following up on Dustin's blog about our idea of proposing screen configurations for ubuntu server, here is how I have set up my environment to use screen by default on my machines.

First of all, I modified my .bashrc to add the following at the end:

Back from Mountain View, California, where I attended the Jaunty Ubuntu Developer Summit. A crazy 10 days where we discussed the future of Ubuntu, and in my case more particularly the server edition. From cloud computing to configuration management, the subjects touched were too numerous to enumerate, but will certainly provide great content for Ubuntu 9.04.

I have uploaded a few pictures and a useless movie if you care to see a few of the faces that were present. 250 people were there, I certainly wasn't able to capture everyone :) A big thanks to Google for hosting our summit on their campus.

J'ai récemment appris l'existence d'un ouvrage des plus effrayant: "Main basse sur l'Ecole Publique" de Muriel Fitoussi et Eddy Khaldi .  Une thèse toute simple: le gouvernement n'a qu'un seul objectif, celui d'anéantir l'Ecole Publique que nous connaissons au profit du capitalisme et de l'enseignement religieux. Une mise en perspective éblouissante des actions du Ministère de l'Education nationale. Si vous n'avez pas le temps de lire le livre, une vidéo faite par des parents d'élèves contient une interview d'Eddy Khaldi édifiante.

J'ai honte de cette France qui veux punir des gens sans procès.

J'ai honte de ce parti socialiste qui au sénat à défendu cette loi qui amènerai à priver des familles entières d'un accès un internet sous prétexte que les majors de la musique souffrent d'un changement des mode de distribution des bien immatériels.

J'ai honte de cette classe politique qui ne comprend rien au enjeux du numérique et qui n'y voit qu'une façon de plus de nous fliquer.

Dans un effort pour mieux connaitre les usages des serveurs Linux, l'équipe serveur Ubuntu lance un sondage en ligne en collaboration avec Redmonk Research.

Ce sondage en anglais, prendra de 10 à 20 minutes de votre temps et nous aidera à définir nos priorité pour le dévelioppement de nos futures version d'Ubuntu Server Edition.

Je rentre d'un séjour de plus d'un mois au Etats Unis, majoritairement pour le boulot, mais j'ai quand même profité de ma présence sur la cote ouest pour aller me baller un peu sur la cote et surtout à Yosemite.  J'y ai pris quelques photos dont vous trouverez une sélection sur flickr. LinuxWorld 2008 just ended, OSCON was a couple weeks ago, I guess now would be a good time for me to post the presentation I used at these events… Both were great events, and Ubuntu won (again) the best desktop product award and for the first time the best booth one :) Clear that our booth kept quite busy the 3 days. It was hard to find a moment to go eat something!

Alors que le parlement européèn travaille sur un "Paquet Telecom" qui semble faire la part belle aux lobbies de la diffusion des médias, le parlement français se prépare à recevoir une loi intitulée "Création et Internet". Beaucoup de similitudes dans ces deux projets, tant en terme de restriction des libertées individuelles qu'en terme de désuétude du mode de pensé (cf mon précédent billet sur le filtrage de l'internet).  

I recently had a discussion with a few people on whether one should filter the net or not for his kids. Here are a few thoughts I consider worth sharing.

I've got 3 kids (9, 13, 15), each one has his own laptop since they are able to read (and even before for the last one).

I took, since the very beginning the stance of educating my kids on what can be found and what can happen on the net.  I have also told them to tell my wife or me when they feel offended. I have also showed them how to block unsolicited contact on chats. In fact, I decided to apply to them the same principles that I got throughout my education^[1] . So far, only once was I asked by my youngest one how can she avoid seeing some sites when she does a search, and showed her how to use a filtered version of Google (that was 3 month ago).
